Company’s take on Engineering in Kenya

On legislation, Norkun Intakes believe the industry is well leveraged since there are various Acts governing the various players. They cite CAP 525 for Architects and Quantity Surveyors and Engineers Act 2011 that serves the engineers, FIDIC and Republic of Kenya Conditions of Engagement document that mainly deals with the public sector.

The company feels the business climate in Kenya has improved tremendously over the last decade and the industry has consequently been vibrant and encouraging to stakeholders.

On infrastructure, Norkun directors note that during the previous political administration, multiple infrastructural projects got off the ground countrywide. These have continued with the present administration, hence speeding up development. Road networks have been expanded through bypasses, trunk roads and creation of missing link roads.

Telecommunication has been enhanced by the arrival of fibre optic cables while power generation and distribution has also improved with better results expected from the ongoing efforts at tapping renewable energy. The company observes that although the water sector has also registered improvement, more must be done to expand and extend existing sewer, which in a number of areas has not been upgraded to meet the needs of upcoming developments.

The directors feel that on the issue of professionalism Kenya has a substantial pool of highly qualified and experienced professionals. However, they call for closer liaison between institutions of higher learning and professional bodies to ensure that courses offered at these institutions are geared towards making the students relevant to the industry and in sync with market demand and the growth trajectory of the country.
