Geomechanics, a subsidiary of the GeoGroup, is a supplier of diesel generators, diesel generator sets, control systems, anti-corrosive diesel generator canopies with sound/fire proof panels. Founded in 1989, Geomechanics satisfies a wide range of customer requirements, large or small, and operates all over Southern Africa.

Geomachanics generators have low fuel consumption capability and are more reliable, thus suitable for African remote conditions where fuel access and technical support is limited. The Coelmo Diesel Geomechanics Generator sets have power output range of 20.3kVA to 300kVA. With silent canopies and COELMO® manual generator control panels that resist breakdown at low oil and high engine temperature, the generators fit situations where peace and quietness are a requirement, like in offices and game reserves.

Geogroup’s Financial Manager Mr. Oosthuizen advises diesel generator buyers: “Go for reliability, this means buy quality which means buy European generators like ours from Italy.” He adds that “a qualified electrical engineer and electrician” should do installations.

Recent Project

One recent interesting project undertaken by Geomechanics was supplying a 30KvA Coelmo genset to power an underground drilling rig doing insitu stress measurements on the Cahorra Bassa north bank power station Geotech study. “What made this so interesting is the fact that the only access to the location was via helicopter. The generator had to be dismantled into three sections and lifted by helicopeter to a platform outside of the adit 147m below the top of the Cahorra Bassa Dam wall. Brett Mannix, the Group’s Works Manager adds. “The spray from the outlet made things difficult. This generator worked in those conditions for over a month hassle-free. We had a 50m heavy duty electric cable that ran from the genset to the rig in the adit. We had to supply diesel daily to site for the generator.”

Demand for generators that work harder and longer is likely to go higher as power supply issues increase. More customers could look up to the more quality and reliable generators from European markets and shun Asian-based cheaper generators according to Mr. Oosthuizen.
