The government of South Africa has allocated US $22.57m for the renewal and improvement of the sewer network system in Bekkersdal located South West of Johannesburg.
The Minister of Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs, Pravin Gordhan, MEC Human Settlements Jacob Mamabolo and Education MEC panyaza Lesufi will launch the service delivery improvement plan (SDIP) in Bekkersdal. This will aid in the improvement of lives of residents in this region.
The SDIP plan will also ensure that residents of Bekkersdal get a new school.
During the launch, the government will also entrust the construction site to the contractor for upgrading, given that the last upgrade of the sewer network was done in 1970.
According to Mamabolo, the needs in the region were raised by residents in the region. The government plans to deliver more interventions with time as part of the plan which also includes construction of new RDP houses.
Earlier on, the community of Bekkersdal had protested demanding for the dissolvement of the Municipal County due to poor service delivery. The sewer network projects will help improve the relationship between the residents and the government.
The City of Johannesburg cleaning team will be in Bekkersdal for 12 months to assist in waste collection. South Africa has also invested in other projects to improve wastewater and water management in different locations, among them the Mmabatho Water Treatment Plant in South Africa set to get an ugrade worth US$27.41m.
