Gauteng province is in plan to spend more that US $8.10bn on economic and social infrastructure projects in the coming three years.

The Finance MEC for the region Barbara Creecy noted on Wednesday this week that the aim for the project is to help improve quality of public transport, health care and education, and new human settlements, as well as mainstreaming township economies.

The new social economic and infrastructure programme will be financed through sourcing of revenue by improving planning and coordination of different spheres of government on infrastructure priorities and spending.

Creecy also noted that the Premier of Gauteng David Makhura had formed a Provincial Infrastructure Coordinating Committee (PICC) for the above purpose. Makhura would chair the committee together with mayors in the region.

Creecy has also further noted that a list of infrastructure projects to be given priority in the coming 15 years had been compiled by the committee.

Alternative ways to look for funding for the different projects will be looked into and both the private and public sectors played a critical role in financing infrastructure project investments.
