Back in March 2015, the Nigerian Government signed an MoU for the Enugu coal-fired power plant. Initially, the project’s sponsorship was by Nigeria’s Geometric Power alongside India’s Essar Group in June 2011. However, the final signing of the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) was with One Nation Energy Limited.

According to the Guardian, the project’s purpose was to explore large deposits of coal in Enugu. More especially, with the intention of the generation of electricity. Using the state’s coal, the project was to build a 500 MW power plant in Enugu.

However, since 2015, the project seems to have been abandoned. As a result, it is reported to have been canceled.

Upon completion, the coal-fired power plant project is expected to help respond to current power challenges such as low generation and sabotage from vandals. The statement read by Njoku indicated that the southeast zone had enough coal resources to supply the amount of power – 500MW- to the country. Ugwuaji also hosts the largest transmission sub-stations in the country.

Ghana will also see the construction of other coal power plants such as the Sunon Asogli Power Plant expected to produce 1,200MW after the second Phase; and the 350MW power plant in the Western Region – an investment of UAEA.
