Tanzania Institute of Quantity Surveyors (TIQS) has recently participated in major construction projects in the country and they are proving to be effective and efficient in their delivery.

President of the Tanzania Institute of Quantity Surveyors, QS Samuel Marwa said this report during a press conference in Dar es Salaam. He commented that quantity surveying services has a fundamental role in contributing to an efficient and cost effective project delivery in the construction industry globally.

“The construction industry is a pivot sector of any country’s economy that transforms various resources into constructed physical economic and social infrastructure necessary for socio-economic development,” he said.

In Tanzania, quantity surveying caters for 60 per cent of the national expenditure. On the other hand, managing and achieving value for money spent in the industry makes the use of quantity surveying services certainly unavoidable hence highly needed in the construction industry.

Quantity surveyors are somehow defined as construction economists who are trained to ensure that the costs of different projects are established, monitored, evaluated, controlled and managed and they generally cover cost and financial control, legal and contractual aspects and management of building and property development in a country.

“We usually calculate the cost planning and commercial management on the entire life cycle of a project from the time it is inspected to the time it is completed,” Mr. Marwa said.

TIQS is an association that is spearheading Quantity Surveyors in the country into becoming the preferred lead advisors to clients in matters of construction projects related to cost, time quality and management of resources, they are also are dedicated to ensure that practicing Quantity Surveyors maintain the highest standards of professional excellence, integrity and code of ethics.
