The Cross River State government has delivered equipment for the building of a 20MW power plant with a view to ensuring 24 hours power supply in Calabar.

The equipment have been designed to operate economically and will at the same time aid the state arrest the issues surrounding power supply to drive an industrialized local economy

Cross River State Governor Professor Ben Ayade, was among the parliamentary Extension in Calabar upon receiving the equipment. The State governor confirmed that the Memorandum of Understandings that he has been signing are taking action.

“This is one of the outcomes of those my trips in my first year in office when we were still trying to do agenda setting for the government,” said Governor Professor Ben Ayade. “It will generate 20MW of embedded power for Cross River State. I am happy to announce to you today that we are taking delivery of 20MW equipment for embedded power generation for the city of Calabar,” he added.

However, the Calabar residents have been assured that electricity tariff will be affordable to all, such that five more containers laden with equipment have been scheduled to arrive soon after the initial delivery of five. The project will not only bring a sigh of relief regarding energy but it will also enhance security in Calabar especially as the Calabar carnival festival is fast approaching.

Nonetheless, the State administration has already commenced the process of strengthening the distribution network in Calabar by replacing obsolete and non-functioning transformers across the city.

Additionally, street lights will be connected to the grid as diesel engines will be picked up from the streets and later on link the street lights to the new delivered power plant such that Calabar South up to Atimbo, Anantigha and all the areas including 8 miles, Nassarawa will be benefit from the connection.

Besides the equipment specially designed for economy, the equipment can as well serve for uninterrupted power supply. In this case Cross River State and Calabar in particular will definitely have uninterrupted power supply, making it the first state capital to have uninterrupted power supply in the country.
