About CSP Today

CSP Today is the reference point for CSP professionals and a cornerstone for communications within the industry.

We provide business intelligence to the industry with focused news, events, reports, updates and information for the Concentrated Solar Thermal Power industry in markets such as India, South Africa, Spain, USA, Chile and the MENA region.

The key challenges faced when securing financing for CSP projects in South Africa and proving the bankability of this technology to financiers will be discussed during CSP Today’s eagerly anticipated free webinaron Tuesday 3rd December at 09.00am GMT (11.00AM SAST).

With three CSP projects under construction in South Africa, totalling 200MW, this market has huge potential and has already attracted the attention of both local and international investors alike. Furthermore, it was announced on 29th October that two CSP projects, with a combined capacity of 200MW, were awarded approved bidder status in Window 3 of the REIPPPP. Another positive sign that the industry is poised for continued growth.

However, CSP continues to face a number of barriers in this region, illustrated by the difficulty in advancing projects to financial close in Round I. Although PV and wind suffered the same delays, experts have highlighted the higher cost of CSP and therefore the added risk when investing in projects.

In addition to this CSP technologies are commercially unproven in South Africa, which in turn has led to added risk for financiers. Therefore, guaranteeing the bankability of CSP in future bidding rounds is a major challenge for the industry.

To discuss this challenge in greater depth, CSP Today has organized a free webinar, taking place onTuesday 3rd December at 09.00am GMT (11.00AM SAST). During this one hour interactive session Richard Warugongo, Investment Officer at the IFC, Alessandra Pardini, Partner at Webber Wentzel and Nicolas Tucker, who is responsible for project finance at Investec, will debate and discuss these critical topics:

  • Lessons learned: What arethe risks associated with CSP technologies? Identify the steps you must take to guarantee your project is bankable in future bidding rounds
  • EPC and O&M contractor’s perspective:Find out about the key challenges that EPC and O&M contractors have faced in CSP, to streamline your development process
  • The impact of competition on investment: Learn how increasing competition within the REIPPP has impacted financing and what creative funding options are available to guarantee you reach financial close
