The Federal Government has approved the generation of 1000mw of electricity from the Ebony power plant to improve the power generation in the state.

This was announced by the governor of Ebony state, Martin Elechi during his inspection of the construction work at the Califco power plant in Abakaliki, the capital city of the state. The Califco power plant is being built to generate 10mw to power the Ochudo city and the new international market.

The Ebony power plant was test run and is expected to consume 1,440litres of diesel per hour. The plant has a 2,000mw capacity, and its construction is in partnership with American and Korean investors. The arrangements of supplying gas to the plant to increase its output by the end of the year, is at an advanced stage. The contract was awarded to an American company, and the plant is expected to be completed before the second quarter of 2014.

The Federal Government has invested US$10bn to construct 11 power plants to boost power generation capacity in the country. Current installed capacity is at 9, 920mw, available capacity is 6,000mw while the average energy delivered is 80,500 mwh.
