The runway of the Nnamdi Azikiwe Airport, Abuja, has been re-opened for flight operations.The runway was closed for 30 hours for rehabilitation on July 5, 2014. Reports from pilots who have used the runway so far indicate that the rehabilitation of a section of the runway was professionally executed and would enhance safety of flight operations on the runway.
The second phase of the remaining section of the runway is expected to take place next weekend. A NOTAM (Notice to Airmen) to this effect has already been sent to all aircraft pilots and other relevant stakeholders, informing them of the impending closure.
The rehabilitation is being undertaken in two phases to minimize the inconvenience of the runway closure to the air passengers and aircraft operators.
Authorities of the Federal Airport Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) have given a notice of regrets for any inconvenience in the second closure of the runway to passengers and other stakeholders.
In a statement signed by the coordinating general manager of the aviation parastatals Yakubu Dati, the public and all aviation stakeholders were assured regarding the conclusion of the maintenance work on the runway and guaranteed enhanced flight safety on the Abuja Airport runway.
