The US Government in collaboration with the Government of Kenya is going to construct a leadership centre in Kenya for the purpose of training the East African youth to take up executive positions in Governance, Business and civil society.

This was disclosed by the president of the United States, Barrack Obama during the Young African Leaders Initiative (YALI) summit held in Washington DC and attended by youth from various African nations.

The center, to be started next year, will be able to churn out the next generation of leaders who are well equipped with entrepreneurship skills, and also improve the availability of quality leadership training programs in the region.

Other countries set to benefit from construction of leadership centres are Senegal, Ghana, and South Africa where other centers will also be established. The US Agency for International Development (USAid) is going to fund the four projects at a cost of US$38m.

The summit was attended by selected youth from various African nations aged 25-35. The aim of the summit was to connect this group of budding leaders to leadership-training opportunities at American universities.
This announcement comes at a time where the relationship between the US government and the Kenyan government is perceived to be rocky.

The summit was held ahead of next week’s inaugural U.S.-Africa Leaders Summit where the US president is set to meet about 51 heads of states from Africa.
