The rehabilitation process for the N12, which will cost US $ 11.22m, begun recently with works expected to cover the stretch from Eldorado Park to Zuurbekom next to Soweto.
The road will get refurbishment of structural damages and full resurfacing of the freeway.
The N12 project will see the road connecting 14 municipal wards from the cities of Westonaria, Merafong and Johannesburg is worked on, with completion expected to be in 2 years time.
The 50-km road freeway segment being upgraded will not apply the user payment principle. In addition, the MEC of Roads and Transport in Gauteng Ismail Vadi noted that motorists would no longer have to pay toll fees on the same.
This particular freeway connects Mpumalanga to Gauteng, North West, Northern Cape and Western Cape and has helped in the development of different businesses including industrial and agricultural. This resulted in the increase of road and freight traffic.
Vadi also noted that the N12 being part of Gauteng strategic road network is significant for the development of the economy in the region because it supports the agricultural sector, mining and tourism.
