According to the Total’s Executive Director and leader of delegation Mr. Olubunmi Obembe, the company has acquired the US-based SunPower, known to be the world leader in solar power operation as Total Nigeria Ltd looks forward to fully utilizing abundant renewable energy resources and enhance electricity supply across the country as well as becoming the major global player in the solar energy market.

TNL is currently collaborating with various Federal Government institutions and international partners to help speeding-up the construction of solar power plants in Nigeria through Public Private Partnership (PPP), and particularly partnership with state governments.

At present, three states are already involved with the TNL. These states are Nasarawa, Ekiti and Katsina, involved in the development of various plants. These include 150MW in Nasarawa State, 80MW in Ekiti and 30MW/100MW in Katsina State. Discussions are ongoing between TNL and other states for the construction of the solar power plants projects in their locations.

The first project is likely to be completed by the second quarter of 2015, and in the next 5-8years, the independent power projects are expected to deliver 1700MW of solar, to be circulated across the country with a minimal size of 30MW per plant.
