After going through legal handles on July this year and gaining federal, provincial and municipal approvals, the Victoria Harbor Marina has started from late last month at Victoria Harbor, U.S.

A layer of old bark will be used on the seabed, with clay underneath. Dredging has already started – as of September 23rd and was expected to take 6-8 weeks. Dredging will involve removal of 18, 000 cubic meters of muck and clay from Victoria Harbor seabed.

Dredging will be done, after which pilings on seabed will be done, according to Anthony Utley, Victoria International Marina sales manager. This piling will be done for about a month and this is expected to offer support to two commercial buildings that will be set up, in addition to other marina infrastructure.

Utley has indicated that the two commercial buildings will be “architecturally interesting.” The entire 29-slip marina will be completed in 15 months, although the commercial buildings will take around six months to construct. The buildings will be located on either side of the 29-slip moorage marina.

Conceived in 2008, the Victoria Harbor Marina will take place for about six months. It will harbor yachts about 65 to 150 feet long. A restaurant was also going to be run by a potential tenant, in one of the buildings.

Proponents were worried of the size, location, impact on safety since the harbor is busy, but redesigning offered options such as a lighted route for paddlers located under the commercial buildings. The size of the moorage, claimed as too big that it would reduce safety of the place, was also halved. Proponents were also worried of environmental impacts.

The developer was hoping to re-market the marina through local and international promotions, with several companies already crafting proposals from which the developer would choose. Construction jobs, in addition to other 20-30 other jobs would be created.

The developer is Community Marine Concepts Ltd.
