Prof. Chinedu Nebo, the Minister of Power has commissioned the 25KW Hybrid solar PV/wind demonstration hybrid solar power plant at the National Power Training institute of Nigeria (NAPTIN) Regional Training Centre (RTC) Kainji, New Bussa in Niger State.
The Nigeria-Germany Energy partnership project is being pursued under the Nigeria Energy Support Programme (NESP) and is a combined renewable energy sources capable to operate both off-grid and on-grid.
However, according to the Minister the solar power plant is made up of 10KW solar PV and 3 wind turbines of 5KW each, thus generating a total capacity of 25KW from the hybrid power plant. The two presidents of the countries have signed an agreement in relation to the power plant.
Nebo described the hybrid solar power plant as a practical demonstration to improve energy efficiency in the country as it is expected to provide quick response to power supply shortages, which are currently related to pipeline vandalism. With the power crisis in the country, there are plans to generate 40,000MW by 2020 and is doing a lot in relation to alleviating the shortage.
Nebo commended Germany, which though the German Agency for International Co- operation (GIZ) and in partnership with Nigerian Power Ministry and other public institutions, are improving conditions for policy reforms and investments in renewables, energy efficiency, rural electrification and capacity building in the country through the Nigerian Energy Support Programme (NESP).
