Four substations which directly receive power from the national grid are set to supply 160MW electric power to the electrified Addis Ababa Light Railway Transit (AA-LRT).
Debretsion Gebremichael (PhD), Minister of Communication and Information Technology confirmed the reports and said that the four substations will supply some 160MW of power to the Addis Ababa Light Railway.

The substations which are located at Tor Hailoch in the west, Ayat in the east, Menelik Square in the north and Kality in the south cost the Ethiopian Government a whooping US$ 85m and was completed in December last year.

This program is almost equivalent to the installed capacity of Adama Wind Farm which was launched in 2014.

The power supply construction and installation of the four substations work was undertaken by a Chinese state-owned company, National Grid Company. The same company, jointly with three others, is involved in the power transmission and substations project for the Addis-Djibouti railway line, stretching 750km connecting the capitals of the two nations.

The Addis Ababa Light Railway is a light rail transportation system in Ethiopia contracted by the China Railway Group Limited. The Ethiopian Railways Corporation began construction of the double track electrified light rail transit project in December 2011 after securing funds from the Export-Import Bank of China.
