VA TECH WABAG is one of the world’s most innovative companies, providing complete solutions throughout the water treatment cycle. As a technological leader in the water technology field, WABAG has a wealth of experience in plant design, construction and operation, gained over nine decades.

They offer sustainable solutions for:
●Drinking & Industrial water treatment
●Desalination of sea and brackish water
●Industrial water treatment
●Wastewater treatment
●Water Recycling

Based on all the components that constitute the life-cycle – from plant design, construction and installation, through to long-term operations & maintenance.

WABAG has been active in Africa since the 1980’s with a focus on North Africa including Egypt, Algeria, Tunisia and Libya as well as South Africa and Namibia. During the past twenty years the company has built 70 water and wastewater treatment plants for both municipalities and industries, treating roughly 4 million m3 water per day. Herewith, they have made a major contribution to enhance the quality of life for over 15 million people by securing the supply of clean and safe drinking water and providing adequate wastewater disposal while at the same time protecting the dwindling natural water resources.

Water recycling in Namibia: Building the first direct potable water reuse plant in Windhoek in addition, they have created the world’s first direct potable reuse plant for the conversion of municipal wastewater into drinking water at the New Goreangab WTP in the capital of Namibia. Since 2002, this unique plant has produced 21,000 m3/d of potable water per day, which constitutes 35% of the total water volume consumed in the city of Windhoek.

Another plant that they are especially proud of is the Ujams Industrial Water Reclamation Plant, also located in Windhoek. Here they provided an innovative, tailor-made design for the treatment of industrial effluents emanating from different production facilities in the Industrial Park Ujams where the purified water can be reused for irrigation or industrial water, thus saving 5,200m3/d fresh water every day. WABAG as leader of the Joint Venture UWTC was awarded the contract based on BOOT-scheme – for design, build, own and operate and will operate the plant for a period of 21 years. This model plant was given a Distinction Award at the Global Water Awards held in Athens in April 2015.

Currently, WABAG is engaged in the expansion of the Upper Ruvu drinking water treatment plant in Tanzania. Once completed, this Design and Build Project will increase the production capacity to 210,000m3/d for the safe water supply of around 1 million people. In addition, WABAG has recently built and commissioned a plant in Nigeria that utilises our industrial water technology. This plant will form part of a fertilizer production complex.

Erik Göthlin is the Managing Director of WABAG in Africa and is confident “…that WABAG will further expand its presence on the African continent and will strengthen its activities. Demonstrated countless times, WABAG is a competent and reliable partner and we do hope that the African Water Communities will increasingly work together with us.”
