Quack contractors in construction industry in Nigeria are to blame for frequent collapse of buildings, Nigeria Association of Draughts-men (NAD) Delta State chair Chris Akeni has acknowledged.

Speaking during a workshop organized at the Oteri community, Ughelli North Local Government area Akeni reiterated that, the association’s aim of organizing for the workshop was to re-educate its members on their role in the building construction industry.

The workshop was titled Preventing Unnecessary Building Failures and Collapse in the country.  Akeni urged engineers to be more careful and accurate in their duties and keep in mind their responsibility in building construction.

“The cause of the often occurrence of building collapse is majorly brought about by the faulty design owing to inadequate or improper structural detailing and wrong specifications,” Akeni said

Quack contractors in construction industry in Nigeria are on the increase in the wake of a booming real estate sector in the country.

The Nigerian government is planning to regulate the practice of draughts-men in Nigeria as it is said that the profession has become too porous and open to quacks who deliver incomplete detailed working drawings.

Fred Egbudu, the Ughelli zone chairman applauded the State leader for organizing the workshop for the benefit of educating the responsible professions’ on how to be more focused and the modern trend of the job.

The draughts-men are indispensable members of both the design and built team in any construction work.
