Swedish construction company Transschakt, has invested in a fleet of new Hitachi wheeled excavators in response to the demand from its customer base in the public sector.

The five ZX140W-5s and two ZX170W-5s that Swedish construction company Transschakt is banking on are proving popular due to their versatility and cost effectiveness for projects in and around the city of Uppsala, north of the capital Stockholm.

The Zaxis-5 machines have already demonstrated their flexibility, as they can easily move around between sites and even pull trailers for carrying the subcontractor’s wide range of attachments. The wheels also protect working environments from unnecessary damage, and the low emissions and noise levels are beneficial in urban environments.

“The newer the machine, the better for us and our customers,” explains Pelle Jensen, the owner of Transschakt. “We recommend the latest Zaxis-5 machines as they are quieter and comply with the latest emission regulations. The wheeled excavators also incur lower transport costs – as they can travel around the city – and add to the versatility of our fleet, so that we can react positively to the needs of our customers.”

Transschakt was founded in 1973, bought its first Hitachi excavator (a UH81) in 1982 and currently has 40 Zaxis machines at its disposal for earthmoving, utility and general construction projects. This impressive lineup ranges from a ZX29U-3 mini to a ZX290LC-5 medium excavator, all supplied by the Swedish Hitachi dealer Delvator.

“Our operators are ‘married’ to their machines,” highlights Pelle, “as each one is assigned to an individual Hitachi excavator. Highly skilled and experienced operators are so important to our business. If they have been operating for ten years or more and are working with the latest Zaxis-5 machinery, then they can help us to win tenders on points-based systems and even become a condition of the contract.”

One of operator Daniel Karlsson’s first jobs with the latest ZX140W-5 was on a drainage project opposite the landmark Carolina Rediviva building, part of the Uppsala University Library. This is a part of Transschakt’s five-year contract with the Uppsala Municipality, which encompasses the work of two ZX140W-5s and two ZX170W-5s on a daily basis throughout the area.

“The ZX140W-5 is much better than the previous model,” says Daniel. “The cab is more spacious, quieter and the visibility is excellent. The overall performance is stronger too – the hydraulic system is smoother, it is very precise for drainage work, and the arm reaches further and digs deeper.”

ZX170W-5 operator Melker Markström has had a similar experience working on another drainage project in the village of Bälinge. “This is an excellent machine,” he says. “The fuel consumption is lower when compared to the previous model, the swing motion is smooth and it is stable, even at full reach and with a full load. The cab is also more spacious, with a comfortable seat, better visibility and an extremely useful rear-view camera for working on the roads.”
