US $11.53m bulk water supply scheme in South Africa is set to be constructed  in a town called Colesberg in the Northern Cape in a bid to end the water shortages problem that the region has been facing.

Works on the water scheme will include construction of 25km pipeline abstracting water from the Orange River to Colesberg, new river abstraction works, construction of a new pump station with complete civil, mechanical and electronic works. There will also be the upgrade and extension of the existing Colesberg water treatment works.

According to the Department of Water and Sanitation, the main aim for the construction of the water system is to help eradicate existing water backlog thus ensuring that ther is sustainable water services to approximately 4773 households in the Colesberg municipal until 2030.

Before the implementation of the water project in the region, the communities of Colesberg, Noupoort and Norvalspond experienced water shortages almost every day and in some instances had to fetch water from dams. Some had dirty tapped water.

This project, that is the bulk water supply scheme in South Africa,will officially be handed over to the Umsobomvu Local Municipality in the coming week by the Minister of Water and Sanitation, Nomvula Mokonyane.
Minister Mokonyane noted that the government would respond to water shortages ensuring that communities have clean water.
