N2 Gateway housing construction project in South Africa has been opened by President  Jacob Zuma.

The housing construction project in South Africa is aimed at addressing poverty, destitution and homelessness through the elimination of informal settlements.

Zuma said that the decision to boost housing in the area was informed by the need  to improve the area after seeing the hardships faced by the people.

The President said prior to the launch of the project, there was no adequate housing in the area and residents lived in squalor.

President Zuma further noted that his government would ensure that not only houses are created but, also schools, clinics, correct apartheid spatial planning while at the same time ensuring that people were closer to their workplaces.

The N2 Gateway project has  constructed over 14 000 houses and the Department of Human Settlement is set to complete a further 8000 units by 2019.

The President was accompanied by Water and Sanitation Minister Nomvula Mokonyane and Human Settlements Deputy Minister Zou Kota-Fredericks.

Other projects that were being rolled out nationally by the Government included the construction of informal settlements in Ethekwini in KwaZulu-Natal, the Nelson Mandela Metro in the Eastern Cape and in Lerato Park in Kimberly in the Northern Cape and many others.
