Upgrade of Zandspruit informal settlements in South Africa located in the northwest of Johannesburgis set to be developed into a formal settlement consisting of 7 000 brick and mortar units.

The upgrade was approved by the City of Johannesburg’s monthly council meeting after the review of a report that was complied by a member of the Mayoral Committee for Development Planning, Councillor Rosslyn Greeff with regard to the future of the area.

During the Bua Le Sechaba campaign, Zandspruit was also visited by the City’s Mayoral Committee with the aim of bringing it up to speed with delivery services in a bid to ensure corrective measures are taken.

7068 housing units are expected to be developed and will be divided into 1 068 rental units; 1050 finance-linked but subsidized housing units and 4 950 RDP houses.

According to Councillor Maureen Schneemann, the development of Zandspruit  informal settlements in South Africa would bring Hope to the informal settlement residents.

Schneemann noted that so many people in the area had lived in the City but had been excluded from benefiting from better living conditions and opportunities.

On the other side however, Councillor Vasco da Gama, leader of the Democratic Alliance (DA) caucus in Johannesburg opposed the idea saying that Executive Mayor Parks Tau had to negotiate with the Gauteng Provincial Government to fund the development.

da Gama noted that the development of the area would cost the City about US $0.15bn something which was not in the interest of the City to go ahead with the development thus his party would vote for an amendment of the same.

African National Congress (ANC) councillors insisted on voting on the report without any amendments.
