The South African Council for the Project and Construction Management Professions (SACPCMP) has called upon all students in various learning institutions to ensure that they join their body.

The council which will be holding a massive road show in accredited institutions to raise awareness among students and industry participants of the importance of registering with the SACPCMP Student Chapter category.

The Student Chapter category is geared towards students enrolled full-time or part-time in an undergraduate or postgraduate course with a major in business science or construction management.

This initiative mainly serves as a valuable link between students, registered persons as well as companies in the built environment for purposes of mentorship and their professional development.
The construction industry is an important player in job creation, not only in construction sectors, but also in other sectors of the economy.

Despite the contributions that the built environment makes, students who graduate in this field every year struggle to find employment.

Some of the students complete their studies and register as candidates with the SACPCMP, but in their respective workplaces they do not get exposure and experience for all required competencies. This impedes them from becoming professionals, despite having formal qualifications.

“SACPCMP will be steadfast in creating linkage, network and relationships between the industry and students in the built environment disciplines,”says Nomvula Rakolote, SACPCMP registrar.
SACPCMP will also want to assist learners in Grades 10, 11 and 12 to choose these professions in the not so distant future.

The Student Chapter has been positioned such that secondary school learners also benefit from it.
This is achieved through getting guidance on which units to consider at university level in order to become professionals in the construction industry.
