There have been a number of high profile building collapse in Ghana sadly claiming a number of innocent lives. The gloomy truth is that, any official investigation is not upheld to improve processes but shovelled under the carpet without identifying individuals responsible.
Presently, there is a 4 storey building on the verge of collapsing at OSU Alata, authorities have stepped in and evacuated the occupancy’s. How many more of these buildings around the country are on the verge of collapsing but the tenant, landlords or local authorities lack the basic knowledge of identify signs which could prevent another devastation. Construction companies or contractors and some local authorities lack the basic knowledge or prevent the follow of information for their personal gain.
Now, there is a stigma within the Ghana building industry, regulator, contractors, landlords and tenant respectively. Our ideologies are clouded because of our traditionalist and religious perceptive. We use contractors based on recommendation, we do not research their track record and we intend not to ask question if they are older than we are.
We recommend you ask questions, ask more questions, ask lots of questions, and ask more and more till it becomes very clear. Confirm that, there is a transparent planning, monitoring and controlling system in place. This is highly likely to prevent a shoddy job and it will increase the longevity of the property.
