The upgrade of N3 and N2 freeways in South Africa’s Durban city is expected to face delay, South African National Road Agency (Sanral)has said.

Sanral says that the busy N3 and N2 freeways in the area may delay due to the lack of funds.

Sanral added that the government has not allocated funds for the upgrade of N3 and N2 freeways despite the fact that they have in the past set dates for the project to kick off.

Early this week Sanral said that the roads were currently operating at full capacity and were carrying the highest volumes in eThekwini and the province.

“We were expecting to start the project by the end of August but so far the government has not released any funds for the project hence we expect the project to delay” he added.

The upgrades will mean that lanes will increase by up to five lanes in each direction. This is in the hope of accommodating future traffic growth and safety. The expansion will result in the need to buy more land.

Sanral said that after the completion of the major roads in the city they will look into upgrading other major roads in the country to ensure that the transport sector is streamlined to reach the world class level.

They were not looking at completely closing the freeways during construction, but rather reducing the number of lanes or lane width or reducing speed limits, and encouraging the use of alternative routes such as the M7 and M19.

A date for commencement had not yet been decided as funding for construction had yet to be allocated, Ronny said.

This is one of the project that is expected to give Durban a new face and above all help the congested city have a good flow of traffic.
