The Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport runway in Abuja Nigeria will get a new face after the Federal Government announced that it was releasing funds for its renovation.
According to News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) agreed that the project is expected to kick off any time now and they will give the adequate notice to all parties involved.
The Minister of State, Aviation, and Capt. Hadi Sirika is said to have set up a meeting to ensure that the project’s regulations are met before it is launched.
“Government is making urgent effort to start the rehabilitation of the runway at the Abuja airport and government has provided funds for the work, which could start anytime from now.
“The committee is expected to schedule the maintenance dates, which are expected to run from days to weeks.
The minster also added that they have not so far identified the team that will carry out the project though he added that they will chose one from a very competitive tendering process.
“Among some of the things we are considering is weather the runway will be closed all the daylong or for some few hours as the construction goes on” he added
According to the source, Sirika had designated Kaduna airport as alternative to Abuja so that flights would be diverted to Kaduna while work is ongoing at the nation’s second busiest airport.
Once the project is complete its expected to improve on the transport system of the country above all increae the number of airlines that will be landing into the airport.
This is among the many transport projects that have been launched by the Federal government of Nigeria as they look forward to ensure that they streamline the transport industry.
