Keller Group plc awarded major ground improvement contract in South Africa

Keller Group plc (“Keller”), the world’s largest geotechnical contractor, has been awarded a major ground improvement contract in Durban, South Africa and the total contract is valued at over US$42.7m.

Keller will design and construct the complete ground improvement solution for over 350,000 square metres of warehouses and ancillary offices as part of the Clairwood Logistics Park Development, situated at the old Clairwood racecourse in Durban. The work will be executed over the next three years.

“I am delighted to announce Keller’s success in winning this important project, said Alain Michaelis, Keller Group plc Chief Executive Officer. “Our continued ability to transfer established technologies to new geographies demonstrates Keller’s collaborative strength and ability to deliver large and complex projects around the world,” he added.

Keller is the world’s largest geotechnical contractor, providing technically advanced geotechnical solutions to the construction industry. With annual revenue of around US$2bn, Keller has approximately 10,000 staff world-wide.

Keller is the clear market leader in the US, Canada, Australia and South Africa; it has prime positions in most established European markets and a strong profile in many developing markets.

Ground improvement techniques are used to prepare the ground for new construction projects and to reduce the risk of liquefaction in areas of seismic activity.

Keller was the first company to develop methods and equipment for the successful deep compaction of soil in the 1930s and has continued to develop the equipment and widened its application.

Common soil stabilization techniques include a combination of vibro-compaction with stone, concrete or lime columns as well as soil mixing and injection systems.

These techniques, some of which are shown below, have been used by Keller to improve many thousands of sites around the world.
