The competition starts with regional rounds at eight major universities throughout South Africa. Then, the overall national winner from among the regional finalists is named and presented with a cheque for $3,850.

This year’s eight finalists from Universities around South Africa who have already won the regional competitions will be meeting at the Hilton Hotel in Johannesburg for the ceremony.

Participating universities include: University of the Free State, University of Cape Town,
Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University, Tshwane University of Technology, University of Johannesburg, University of KwaZulu-Natal, University of Pretoria and University of Witwatersrand.

Participants’ thesis models are available to view at The Hilton Hotel between morning hours and midday on 10 May 2017.

Tertiary institutions are encouraged to send architectural and design students to view the models and listen to a student lecture that will be delivered by the distinguished award winning architect Andrew Makin.

The architectural challenges of the future will require an innovative architectural mind. This, and the ever-advancing technology at architects’ disposal, when fully utilized, can improve on efficiency and further expand on individual designs.

The many aspects which make up fine design include consideration of the principles of sustainability, appropriate built cost and attractive lifecycle costs, technical skills.

However, it is creative panache that sets great architects above their peers as they strive to make exceptional and meaningful contributions to South Africa’s diverse and multi-cultural landscape.
