Global consulting firm Aurecon in South Africa has appointed Nelisiwe (Neli) Magubane  to its Board of Directors.

With 24 years experience in the energy sector and being a professional engineer, Magubane previously held different roles in different organizations in the South African Energy sector. This includes her appointment as the first Director General of the Department of Energy (DoE) back in 2009 after its split from the former Department of Minerals and Energy (DME).

During her term in DoE, there was the development of the Integrated Resource Plan for 2010 and the Renewable Energy Independent Power Producer Procurement Programme (REIPPPP).

Magubane got appointed as the Chief Director for DME in 2000 where she was influential in the development of the electricity pricing policy and the electricity supply industry reform strategy.

Upon her appointment as the Deputy Director General for electricity and nuclear energy in 2002, she established a legislation which created National Energy Regulator of South Africa (Nersa). This is now responsible for regulation of the petroleum, gas and electricity sector.

Magubane is a member of the Engineering Council of South Africa and Chairperson for the Councils Audit Risk and Compliance Committee.

She has held non-executive directorship positions with Nersa, Electricity Distribution Industry Holdings and the South African National Energy Research Institute.
