A former Wyndham hotel will soon be converted into a lavish, four-star InterContinental Hotel in San Antonio, Texas. IHG Hotels & Resorts and Scarlett Hotel Group (SHG) are planning to bring a new 391-unit hotel to 111 E. Pecan St. Recently, SHG collaborated with Trailbreak Partners, a real estate investment firm to secure $158 million for the development.

According to the developers, this project marks San Antonio’s first InterContinental Hotel property. Thus far, the worldwide InterContinental Hotels & Resorts luxury hotel brand has about 211 operating properties and 93 in the works. Therefore, IHG’s Senior VP, Matt Frankiewicz described the San Antonio development as an exciting addition to their brand’s portfolio.

The new InterContinental Hotel will replace the former Wyndham Hotel which was closed during the COVID pandemic in 2021. After acquiring the building from Cypress Real Estate Advisors of Austin, SHG promptly devised plans for a $50 million overhaul.

But the actual construction costs have long since outgrown the initial $50 million projection announced in June 2021. The developers expect the reconstruction work on the 21-story building to reach completion by 2024.

Development plans for the InterContinental Hotel

The original hotel boasted 400 rooms, a rooftop pool, and direct access to the river taxi service. However, after the renovations, the new InterContinental Hotel will offer a 40,000-square-foot meeting space. It will also include restaurants and bars as well as enhanced rooftop amenities.

Additionally, the hotel’s co-working spaces will serve as private dining spaces at night. While the meeting rooms will incorporate smart glass installations for convenient control of backlighting or daylight during events and presentations. In other words, guests will be able to adjust the opaqueness of the electrochromic glass with the press of a button.

The new InterContinental Hotel offers guests downtown views, along with easy access to the River Walk and river taxi landing area. Its location is also adjacent to the Weston Centre office tower and approximately a block away from Weston Urban’s 32-story development.
