Nigeria’s Dangote Group has signed a Memoranda of Understanding with the Kano State Government. The MoU is for the proposed 100MW Dangote-Black Rhino Solar Power Plant.

This agreement took place at the office of Secretary to the State Government in Kano. The project will be located at Zakirai, in Gabasawa Local Government Area of the state.

Africa’s richest man, Aliko Dangote said the MoU was another step in the developing partnership between Dangote Group and the state government in their determination to improve the economy of the country.

Decline in power sector

Dangote described the decline in the power sector as sad. “This has resulted in decline of the status of Kano. Kano was once a strong industrial and commercial city in the past three decades”.

He blamed the power challenges which have continued to hinder industrialization and economic development in the state. “As we all know Kano’s excellent status as a great centre of business in the sub-Saharan region for almost two centuries has sadly declined”.

“It is no secret that the shortage of supply of reliable and affordable electricity is one of the major challenges facing the state’s economy,” he said.

Economic and national development

Once complete, this project will add 100MW to the state’s electricity supply. “It is fully in line with our group’s strong commitment to contribute to the improvement of the state’s economic potential and over all national development”. The President of Dangote Group further added.

“The power plant which is a state-of- the- art renewable energy plant will be fully financed”. The president said. This will be done jointly by Dangote Industries Ltd and its global strategic partner, Black Rhino Group. “Dangote industries promises to convert most energy of the sun into high quality clean electricity with no destructive impact on our nation’s economy”. He added.

Alhaji Usman Alhaji, the Secretary to the state government, signed the MoU on behalf of the State. He said the important event displayed the sacrifice of Aliko Dangote.

He also said his office had performed another notable ceremony before that particular signing ceremony. The distribution of vehicles to various security agents to improve security of the state.

“The security concern is all part of effort of Kano State government to secure the state and its investments, such as the Dangote-Black Rhino project”. Alhaji further added.

He expressed gratitude to Dangote for making Kano proud. He further added that all hands will be on deck towards seeing to completion of the desired project in good time.
