5 Tips for Building a Modern Deck

Building a deck is not an easy task to undertake, but you can take it yourself if you are competent, well-equipped and well-prepared. However, it’s useful to have at least one person to help, and you should allow plenty of time to finish, especially if your deck is more complicated. Alternatively, you can hire a deck designer to help you with the project.

There are many new decking products on the market, and deck designs continue to evolve and improve. Here are four essential tips for building a modern deck that will last for years.

1.   Choose your deck materials

Some years ago, most manufactured deck boards were artificial composite, typically a mix of wood fibers and polymers. Composite decking has a huge improvement over wood, but today most manufacturers offer better deck boards: capped or shelled decking. The core of shelled decked resembles that of composite and is made from natural PVC, but the body is covered with a more robust, tougher polymer layer. That means better resistance to fading, stain, rotting, and scratches.

2.   Prepare the ground

Prepare the ground by creating a flat, weed-free space for the deck. Carefully measure out a square area, place pegs in each corner, and use string to connect them. This will give you a visual image of your deck, including where to place your posts or helical piles for decks. Use a set square to measure diagonally from post to post and ensure that everything looks straight.

3.   Install blocking to keep the deck flat and square

Manufactured decking is not as strong as wood decking, so it can allow joists to sag, leading to a wavy deck finish. To help keep beams flat, always install blocking perpendicular to the posts. In addition, attach diagonal blocking to prevent the entire frame from racking.

4.   Fix railing and posts

While deck railing is the most popular choice for a raised deck, it is possible to use a glass screen or something similar. It’s recommended that you place your railing posts before installing decks unless you are using surface-mounted posts. First, cut and assemble your deck posts to build and install your railings. You will require a deck post on each edge, and depending on the size of your deck, you may require a central one on each side. Cut the base and handrails exactly to height.

Place the spindles underneath the handrail and secure them by fastening diagonally through the spindle into the rail. Fit the base onto the spindles and screw together, attaching the corner deck posts to the base. After that, attach finished railings onto the corner deck posts.

5.   Lay the deck boards

Place the first board flush with the outside corner of the frame. If you are opting for a more natural aesthetic, consider using timber decking boards which offer a classic and timeless appeal. Be sure to lay the boards in the opposite direction of the joints. If you are using timber, leave a 1/5-inch gap between each panel to allow expansion and contraction. Mark and countersink screw holes of each joist center and use at least two screws per beam for each decking panel. Continue with the process until you finish your modern deck.

Endnote

It’s easy building a modern deck if you have a flat, prepared piece of ground that you can lay simple frames and deck boards over. However, if you don’t have DIY experience, especially in woodworking or landscaping, consider calling in a professional.
