Road construction in Ethiopia has received the much needed impetus to upgrade its 76.8km Hamusit-Este gravel road in South Gondar zone, Amhara region to asphalt.

This follows an agreement with Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC) that allowed the country to receive a loan of US $ 20 Million Dollar towards the project.

Ethiopia says the road will help in smooth transportation of key farm produce in the region thus boosting agriculture sector. Similar agreement was sign with Mali and Benin.

The loan to Benin will help small scale vegetable farmers adopt more efficient techniques in processing and storing their produce. This includes access roads, small processing plants and storage facilities.

The loan to Mali will go to upgrading a 188 km stretch of road that serves 24 villages where key activities such as animal husbandry and agriculture take place.

The Director-General of the OPEC Fund for International Development (OFID), Suleiman J Al-Herbish pointed out the institution’s longstanding work with all three countries, dating back to the institutions inception in 1976.
