The facility will feature a storage capacity of 1,500-megawatt-hours as well as a lifespan of 80 years. As a part of the project, the Dubai Electricity and Water Authority will also develop a 5.4-kilometre-long cable car route alongside the construction of an upper dam and power generators. The facility will make use of the water from the 70-meter dam. Thus far, the first 37-meter-high Roller compacted concrete (RCC0 wall for the dam’s upper wall has been completed.

The CEO and Managing Director of DEWA, Saeed Mohammed Al Tayer revealed that the project would provide well over 200 administrative, operational and technical jobs in the region. He added that the project will contribute toward achieving diversified sources of energy in Dubai. Additionally, it will significantly contribute toward the Dubai Clean Energy Strategy 2050 as well as the Net Zero Carbon Emissions Strategy 2050, which aims to derive 100% of Dubai’s total power capacity from clean sources of energy by 2050.

July 2020

Recently, the MD & CEO of Dubai Electricity and Water Authority, HE Saeed Mohammed Al Tayer, took a visit to the Hatta dam where a pumped-storage hydropower station is currently under construction.

The station in Hatta is bound to be the first of its kind in the Gulf area. The Hatta dam will have a storage capacity of 1,500 MWh and a life span of 80 years, with investments totalling around US$387 million. According to a report, the tunnelling operations have already begun operating at the station and this is a key stage that uses the latest and safest drilling technologies to fit Hatta’s geological features while following the highest international environmental standards.

The project is well in line with the UAE’s goals to secure a happy and sustainable future and make Dubai number one in all areas. The hydroelectric power station translates shows how hard DEWA, Dubai Electricity and Water Authority, has worked towards protecting natural resources whilst increasing clean and renewable energy.
