Construction of  8,000 kilometres of tarmac roads in Kenya is set to begin in a week’s time to ease transportation of goods and passengers and boost the country’s economy, Transport Principal Secretary John Mosonik  has said.

He said that the construction of the tarmac roads in Kenya will involve the tarmacking of roads in various parts of the country; about 16 Nairobi-Mombasa highways to ease transportation of goods and passengers.

“Among the projects, is a dual carriageway from Mariakani to Mombasa to ease traffic flow between the port of Mombasa and the hinterland, the project will also be implemented in phases countrywide to enhance economic growth,” Mr. Mosonik added.

He added that African Development Bank has funded for the implementation of the dual carriageway road. The PS also pointed out that the construction of the Dongo Kundu bypass was going on, adding that it would address the transport crisis at the Likoni channel.

“The Dongo Kundu bypass will be linked to the port’s second container terminal for eventual effective cargo delivery,” he said.

Kenya is on a spree of enhancing their infrastructure, among the projects that are underway are construction of terminal 1E and a runway almost complete at the Jomo Kenyatta International Airport, construction of Phase 1 of the second container terminal at the port which is expected to be completed by March next year and also construction of the Dongo Kundu bypass among others.

“When terminal 1E will be commissioned soon, passenger capacity at the airport will rise from 6.5 million to 10 million annually,” Mr. Mosonik said.

Other projects which will be commenced before long include the expansion of Kisumu and Eldoret airports so that they can accommodate large aircrafts.

KPA chairman Marsden Madoka said the road projects in Kenya would boost transportation of cargo from the port to the rest of the country and also the neighbouring countries.
