Malawi to construct modern airports to boost tourism

The Malawi government is seeking to partner with investors to help in the construction of a new airport in Mangochi District that will open up Lake Malawi to the world.

Minister of Industry, Trade and Tourism Henry Mussa said the collaboration will be under the Public Private Partnership (PPP) arrangement and will see the government transform air transport in the country.

Mr Henry also added that plans are underway for rehabilitation of two other airports with the aim of boosting trade and tourism around Lake Malawi as well as in the country.

“The partnership will also be needed to help in the construction of modern airports at Likoma, Nyika National Park and Blantyre,” said Mr. Mussa.

Boost in tourism

Construction of the airports will be a boost to the tourism industry and will also be supplemented with high-standard hotels given that the airports are situated in Likoma and Mangochi area  which are tourist destinations in the country.

“What we want is for tourists to travel from their destinations straight to lake shore resorts. We think this is one way to boost tourism in the country,” he said.

The government also expanding its tourist destinations with more facilities to attract more tourists by providing easy access and upgraded infrastructure in bid to boost the country’s economy.
