The repair of the Marine Beach Bridge in Lagos is to be undetaken by the government of Nigeria through the Federal Ministry of Works over the next five months, a period when passage will be closed to all vehicular movements to enable ease execution of the project.

The disclosure was made by Frederic Oladeinde, the state Commissioner for Transportation in a statement where he described the overdue project as vital for the safety of the people of Lagos State, especially motorists that ply the bridge to access different parts of the state.

The scope of the work

The repair of the Marine Beach Bridge involves bearing and expansion joint replacement and it is planned to be executed in two phases, with each phase focusing on one lane of the bridge at a time. The first phase will see construction work implemented on the lane inbound Apapa while the second phase will focus on the lane that conveys vehicles outside the axis.

Mr. Oladeinde said that the repair works are in line with the state’s vision of providing a seamless transportation system in the metropolis.

Alternative routes

The commissioner explained that the necessary palliative works have been carried out on all alternative routes to ease movement for motorists during the course of the project.

According to him, motorists inward Wharf Road will be diverted to the other section of the bridge outward Apapa.  A contraflow of 200 meters has also been designed for vehicles to realign with a proper direction inward Ajegunle or Wharf Road, Apapa, and Motorists descending to Total Gas would drive through without any interferences.

The commissioner further said that operatives of the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority would be stationed at the construction locations to manage traffic.
