Vice President of Nigeria Namadi Sambo has said that the country can produce 39.9 million metric tonnes of cement. Sambo said this during the Line II Ground-Breaking ceremony of the new UNICEM Cement Factory in Mfamosing, Calabar – Cross River State in Nigeria, where he represented the president.

The UNICEM Cement Factory in Nigeria will now help the country to meet its self sufficiency goal in cement production. This goal is outlined in the Backward Integration Policy launched in 2002 by the Federal government.

The president’s message at the launch of UNICEM Cement Factory was that the government would continue formulating policies that would revamp the manufacturing industry as it was the country’s backbone. He has also promised to end challenges being faced by industries at the Cross River State, since the 550MW Calabar power plant is to be launched soon by the government.

He said the government was ready to cooperate with relevant agencies in the public and private sectors in order to improve the Nigerian communities. Governor of Cross River State also, through his deputy Mr Efiok Cobham, said a viable business environment would be provided.

Earlier on, Minister for Industry, Trade and Investment, said that the cement industry performance was evidence that the country was realizing industrial revolution. He said this through Minister of State, Dr. Samuel Ortom.
