Harris Bay, a Californian developer, is planning to build a 1,000-unit, mixed-use apartment complex on West Josephine Street that would also touch the St. Mary’s Strip in San Antonio. The project will include 1,075 parking spaces. Additionally, there will be 70,000 square feet of retail space spread across four mixed-use buildings on roughly 5.7 acres.

It would add to the flurry of housing developments, 2,500 to be precise, underway in Tobin Hill. These included the 338-unit Tin Top Flats at The Creamery by Embrey Partners (behind Hawthorne). Other ongoing developments include the 259-unit Josephine, co-developed by The Lynd Co. and Opportunity Home San Antonio. The latter is located at 120 W. Josephine St. in front of Hawthorne and practically next door to Harris’ project).

These ongoing developments will make the neighborhood the most popular in the downtown area and possibly all of San Antonio. Moreover, Nathaniel Hawthorne Academy is part of planned developments in this same region. Others are set to be constructed on West Grayson, next to Polk Street and across from The Lonesome Rose.

Harris Bay advocating for the conversion of Polk Street into a pedestrian mall

Harris wants Polk Street to be converted into a pedestrian mall with a variety of stores and eateries.

“With this site, in particular, we can begin designing for people rather than cars. Since I don’t believe vehicles will ever completely disappear, we must make sure we have enough parking.

However, we think that some of the residents might not own automobiles, or if they do, they might not drive them on weekdays. We simply believe that now is the perfect moment and opportunity to continue development (in the region), build many services that the neighborhood can access on foot, and begin to connect Tobin Hill to the Pearl.”
