The union government has officially announced its plans for the Indo-China Frontier Highway project. The development plans revealed that the project will feature a two-lane, 1.748-kilometer frontier highway. At certain pinpoint locations, the highway is said to stretch well over 20 kilometers from the international border.

The frontier highway will be closer to the India-Tibet-China-Myanmar border. It will start from Bombila, and then pass through Nafta. Thereafter, it will continue along to Huri, and Monigong, which are the closest points to the India-Tibet border. Moreover, the highway will further pass through Jido and Chenquentry, which are the closest points to the China border.

Indo-China Frontier Highway project to feature 800 kilometers of greenfield

Back in 2018, the Centre notified the corridor at Arunachal Pradesh as a National Highway (NH). Once a road has been notified and accredited as an NH, it then, becomes the responsibility of the transport ministry to construct it.

The frontier highway will help prevent migration from border areas. Thus in terms of checking incursions, the highway bears strategic significance. Quite impressively, it will be amongst the longest national highways to be notified in one go, more especially, in recent times. The frontier highway’s designation will be NH-913. It will serve as an essential boost for the seamless movement of defense forces as well as equipment to the border.

In total, the Indo-China Frontier Highway project’s cost estimation stands at Rs 27,000 crore. Additionally, it will feature nine packets that make up its entire, full stretch. Taking it a step further, around 800 kilometers of the corridor will be greenfield. As a result, the project will include the construction of bridges as well as tunnels.

Between 2024 and 2025, the transport ministry plans to complete the sanctioning of all works. Subsequently, the highway is expected to reach completion between 2026 – 2027. Speaking about the project, a government official said that through such projects, villages close to the international borders would further observe development.
