The SA Forum of Civil Engineering Contractors (SAFCEC) has called for the promulgation of the construction empowerment codes. The association claims the delay in broadcasting the construction sector codes was making some companies noncompetitive for public sector contracts. SAFCEC executive director Webster Mfebe called on trade and industry minister Rob Davies to publicize the codes which were agreed by all stakeholders in May last year.

The delay, according to Mr. Mfebe, the delays betray policy uncertainty. This, he added, has consequences for the business continuity and employment. Consequently, some companies are even rendered noncompetitive for public sector contracts.

Mfebe stressed the relationship between politics and the performance of the economy. He explained that politics influenced the macroeconomic environment within which an economy can either thrive or dive.

Mfebe said the country’s sorry state of affairs has negatively affected economic prospects for South Africa’s young democracy. Business confidence is very low and this affects investor appetite to invest in the economy.
