Upcoming contractors in South Africa have received training boost after the Department of Transport and Public Works offered successful contractor development training programmes for a period of four weeks targeting upcoming contractors in the building industry.

The training took place in Riversdale and Worcester, and in Piketberg and Saldanha.

The course is structured with a modular design to enable participants to continue to actively run their business in construction while they undertake their study. The course is mainly made to support the Department’s Expanded Public Works Programme (EPWP).

Course components include building the construction business, enterprise development, building the construction business, managing the construction site and applying innovative safety principles to the construction site

Ntombi Sibozo, an owner of a contractor business from Zwelethemba, says that after just a couple of years of experience, her limited theoretical knowledge and skills about managing a construction business became skewed and limited. She added that the traing made a huge impact.  “I can now share the knowledge I’ve gained here with the people working with me. Some of the key topics I’ve learned about include drafting construction contract documents, leading and supervising construction teams, and tendering for construction contracts,” she said.

The Department has committed itself to assisting participants in the building industry, including women, to polish their knowledge and become better at operating viable business entities. This will give them the skills and ability to develop and grow their businesses to enable they generate an income for themselves, and possibly create employment opportunities for the wider society.

Beside this four-week training program, the Department is also offering another ten-month accredited training course for Level 2 Construction Industry Development Board (CIDB) contractors.
