Seaworld Investment Holdings has sent a proposal to the eThekwini Municipality  with the aim of turning Virginia Airport in South Africa into housing construction.

According to the municipality, the proposal by Seaworld has been treated in line with the provisions of legislation and policies governing Supply Chain Management (SCM) in South Africa.

Redevelopment of the property will include construction of a commercial property, hotel, residential offices, leisure resources and other facilities.

The development is set to cost US $0.46bn with the eThekwini Municipality not expected to fund it but can only offer services and expertise in the implementation of bulk infrastructure services.

According to the proposal, Seaworld Investment Holdings (Pty) Ltd will source for the funding of the project and develop the airport into something that is five times the size of Virginia Airport in Scottburgh.

The site of  Virginia Airport in South Africa is currently leased to operators for both business and recreational aviation due to a feasibility study done on it that indicated that it was not suitable for use as an airport. This was due to various reasons and the fact that the City was not benefiting financially from its use.

Commercial flights will be moved to the Shaka International Airport while the flight school will relocate to Scottburgh.
