Sigh of relief for Tanzania road contractors

Tanzania road contractors have a reason to smile after they were assured of early payment of all the road projects that they have been carrying and the ones they will be carrying in the future.

According to Tanzania’s deputy Minister for Works, Transport and Communications, Engineer Edwin Ngonyani in the past the government had lacked proper payment schedule of which they have ensured that it is being dealt with.

He added that most of the contractors have been following up their payment of which the government will ensure that all outstanding payments are made as currently there is funds for the same.

Making the remarks when he visited ongoing construction projects including the most anticipated upgrading of Uyovu-Bwanga-Biharamulo 112 kms road, the minster said that all the funds will be released in a week’s time.

The state official called upon the contractors to ensure they carry our quality work in the ongoing projects and any other in the future as with that they will be able to win more tenders from the government.

He also warned those carrying out shoddy works that they will risk being blacklisted from the government data in carrying out any formal business.

Kagera Regional Manager under Tanzania National Roads Agency (TANROADS), Engineer Andrea Kasamwa who was also in the event called upon the Deputy Minister to ensure that they closely supervise the construction of Kyaka-Bugene 59.1kms road that is highly needed by the residents.

“The government will first complete the Omugakorongo-Murongo road, which was among pledges made by retired President Jakaya Kikwete during the 2010 campaigns. Due to financial constraints, the Omurushaka-Murongo road will be undergoing periodic maintenance,” he said.

He added that the government will pump more money into the road and transport ministry so that more contractors can get work done.
