Tanzania National Roads Agency (TANROADS) says it has established a special consulting engineering unit aimed at building capacity of local engineers in road construction projects.

Minister for Works, Transport and Communication, Prof Makame Mbarawa  believes that the move will reduce the funds spent on the engagement of foreign experts.

According to the Minister for Works, Transport and Communication, Prof Makame Mbarawa they have already formed a special consulting Engineering Unit that will ensure that is catered for.

He said they agreed on the same in a bid to build the capacity of local engineers who will oversee road construction projects. This move will save the funds spent on the engagement of foreign experts.

Speaking while overlooking the ongoing construction project for 112 kilometer road project from Uyovu to Bwanga and Biharamulo, this is currently being supervised by local consulting engineers.

The minister added that the government is satisfied by all projects being handled by the local contractors and engineers and they want to ensure that they give them maximum support as the government.

“WE have currently at least million Us dollars worth projects that are being supervised by the local consulting engineers and we are sure they will end on time and they are located in the regions of Kagera, Mwanza, Geita and Kilimanjaro” he added

He expressed satisfaction on the good supervision work by the local engineers, pledging to grant support so that more funds could be saved. The minister further noted that in five years time major projects will be channeled to the agency so that the funds obtained would be directed to other construction projects.

The minister called upon the engineers to ensure that they deliver quality services to the ongoing projects and ensure that they keep on improving to reach the International standards.

“We want local contractors also to work on International projects all over the world and that’s why we are ensuring that we give them our full support that they need” he added
