Close to US$ 40M was approved by the West African Development Bank (BOAD), an international Multilateral Development Bank established to serve the nations of Francophone and Lusophone West Africa, for the construction of a 42MWp Awandjelo solar power plant in northern Togo.
Set to be implemented under a public-private partnership (PPP), the project which is also backed by the International Finance Corporation (IFC), is part of the Scaling Solar programme in the West Africa region. The programme is also being implemented in Ivory Coast, Niger, and Senegal. It seeks to encourage private companies to venture into solar energy in order to deliver energy to the country’s power grid, as well as to ensure that electricity projects are completed quickly (within a period of two years at most).
Expectations for the Awandjelo Solar Power Plant project
The Awandjelo solar power plant project, the independent power producer (IPP) of which has not yet been identified, will enable Togo to diversify its electrical mix by increasing the share of renewable energies from 27% in 2021 to 40% in 2024 and improving the country’s rate of electrification from 59% in 2021 to 75% by 2025.

As part of the scaling solar programme, another solar power plant will be constructed at Salimde, a town in the Tchaoudjo prefecture in the country’s centre. The International Finance Corporation and the government of Togo agreed to construct two solar power plants with a total capacity of 60 to 90 MWp.
