This summer, RC1 and RC2 are the two adjacent contracts which are currently in progress to improve U.S. 1 lane in Pennsylvania.  The projects involve the reconstruction and widening of the pavement, building several bridges, and improving several intersections running through a continuous three-mile section of highway in Bensalem and Middletown townships. This three-phase project is part of PennDOT’s initiative to improve four miles of U.S. 1 in Bucks County.

The RC1 contract involving the  U.S. 1 lane in Pennsylvania involves reconstruction of the southward part of U.S. 1, from Old Lincoln Highway to north of the Turnpike which is still in progress, along with construction of bridges over Pennsylvania Turnpike, ramps and a street road. Decks are also being built towards the northward side of the new bridges that go over the Turnpike and Street Road

The new concrete decks which are to be positioned on both new spans are expected to be done by late summer, and also the construction of the abutment or bridge supports are to continue throughout the summer on the new bridge, stretching northwards over Turnpike ramps with deck construction in the fall.

While bridge construction is in progress, some installations are taking place which include, subsurface utilities and parts of the stormwater drainage system along the southward side of the U.S. 1 highway, and also sound walls installations are being put in place between Route 132 or Street Road and the commercial area approaching Old Lincoln Highway.

The new U.S. 1 ramps towards the south, leading to and from Street Road (Route 132) remain closed, with the exception of the ramp from U.S. 1 that is currently being used temporarily to connect to eastbound and westbound Street Road. The entire  $94 million  RC1 construction project will continue until mid-2022.

The RC2 contract of the U.S. 1 lane in Pennsylvania is focusing on building walls and embankments in each direction towards the north of the Pennsylvania Turnpike’s Bensalem Interchange through the Penndel/Business U.S. 1  Interchange, which will support a third travel lane along this route.

Construction of foundations for the abutments and piers, for the new bridge stretching southward over the Neshaminy Creek is underway, and once these foundations are in place the crew will start the methodical aspect of the work which is building the bridge supports. This $110.9 million RC2 project is expected to be completed in mid-2026.
