Flowcrete South Africa has donated a bright, attractive and easy to clean floor to a day care centre that provides care and education to disadvantaged young children.

The Project Feed the Children Early Childhood Development Day Care Centre was set up in 2012 by founder Shaun Botha in an impoverished rural township on the outskirts of Benoni, Gauteng. Initially the centre’s aim was to serve as a babysitting service but it is now working with The 100% Foundation to become a community education and skills development hub.

Approximately 85 children aged 18 months to six years attend the centre’s crèche on a daily basis. To ensure that the centre is up to the task of caring, teaching and inspiring this many children, The 100% Foundation contacted Flowcrete South Africa to discuss a floor that would create a colourful, exciting and fit-for-purpose surface.

Zina Rotherham, Development and Project Manager at The 100% Foundation said: “The educators are inspired and excited about the floors. Working in this environment can be challenging, there is a lot of sand and mud and when the weather is bad the problems expand.

“With the new floors they will be able to keep the classroom cleaner and it will be easier for them to clean. The children also nap on a mat during the day and this flooring is much more comfortable than the cement flooring and not as cold.”

Craig Blitenthall, Flowcrete South Africa’s Managing Director, said: “Flowcrete South Africa donated 90 m2 of the vibrant, epoxy resin floor finish Peran SL Fruity for the Project Feed the Children ECD Day Care Centre. A variety of colours were applied throughout several classrooms, including Tangerine, Kiwi and Grapefruit.

“This choice of flooring was ideal for the centre, as its bold visuals would help to create a fun, child-friendly space, while the fact that it is seamless and impervious makes it very quick and easy to wash away any mud, dirt or contaminants that end up on the floor.”

The durability of Peran SL Fruity is a distinct advantage in environments such as early learning centres, as it is able to withstand the inevitable scuffs, scrapes, scratches and spillages that it will be subjected to – maintaining its aesthetic and functional properties for the long term.

Zina added: “We are so grateful for the generous donation Flowcrete has made to this centre. It is not only the cosmetic change that makes a difference but the social impact on the people is immeasurable, they feel as though they are important and what they do is important when we take the time to invest in them.”
