A new extension with 240 beds will be built in the oldest and largest veterans’ home in the USA in Yountville, California. The California Veteran Home, Skilled Nursing Facility, and Memory Care Project will provide long-term care for elderly and disabled veterans, including those with Alzheimer’s, dementia, and traumatic brain injuries. The project design was inspired by veterans, the program, and the venue. All facilities are modeled on a homely environment with personal rooms that are designed for care and efficiency. The common areas give a feeling of living room with natural light and views, while several outdoor patios are accessible throughout. A direct route to the “neighborhoods” makes it easier for members to get to their rooms, a series of centralized elevators and a traffic route facilitate navigation.

The project will include features such as enhanced HVAC systems, underfloor heating, displacement air cooling, circadian lighting, plumbing fixtures, outside decks, an outdoor physiotherapy area, and COVID19 prevention strategies. Solid wood, advanced daylight strategies, and powerful, energy-enveloping mechanics. Rudolph and Sletten manage the construction work as general contractors and CannonDesign is the architecture and interior design office for the project.

“Based on federal draft standards for new veteran’s homes and in accordance with the floor plan of the newly constructed Redding and Fresno homes, the new facility will be constructed in 30 residential units or neighborhoods for residents. Change in the character of long-term care, emphasis on a non-institutional character both in the physical facility and in the operational area. The continuation of the project is critical to address the significant challenges facing the facilities and maintain the state’s commitment to caring for veterans at the Yountville home, ”said a DSG spokesman. Once the installation is completed in 2023, it will match the existing architectural style buildings, Rudolph and Sletten said.
