Zimbabwe is staring at power shortage following continuous drop in daily power generation.
Statistics released by Zimbabwe Power Company (ZPC) show the power generation have dropped to below 1 200 MW from about 1 400 MW that was being generated in recent months.
The country’s national power demand at peak periods is estimated to be 2 200MW, while ZPC can only produce 1200MW.
According to ZPC, Hwange Thermal Power Station is currently sending out 547 MW to the national grid, while Kariba Hydro-Power Station was sending 521 MW, and other smaller power stations contributing a total of 80MW.
The ZPC managing director Noah Gwariro also added that they are in the process of looking for more funds to enable them repower the Bulawayo power station that will see an increase in power generation in the country.
“We have already applied to the Indian government to fund Bulawayo project and we are looking to get more from others because the project is not restricted to the Indian Government only” said
He added that they are calling for more investors that are willing to partner with in the re-powering exercise, to come onboard and help in the same.
Once the re-powering project for Bulawayo is complete, it will enable them produce more than 9 799.06 GigaWatt-hours of electricity during 2015.
